What’s in a Name

Every name starts somewhere. Ours started with a simple ancient Greek word: kala.

We were looking for a name that could somehow capture the essence of what we wish every person who lives in one of our homes experiences. To be well in the most complete sense possible.

What drew us to kala was its connection to beauty, goodness, and the everyday experience of being well.

Beautiful and Good

In ancient Greek, kalós (καλός), the word behind kala, could mean beautiful, good, fine, or noble. It could describe the appearance of a person, the quality of an object, or the character of an action.

In Homer’s Odyssey, the word describes a good harbor. Centuries later, Aristotle gave to kalon, the beautiful or noble, an important place in his thinking about virtue. He described the courageous person as someone who acts for the sake of what is noble.

The Greeks also used the phrase kalos kagathos: “beautiful and good.” It expressed an ideal that brought outward qualities and inner virtue together. How a person lived mattered alongside how they appeared.

In modern Greek, kala (καλά) can mean “well.” Ask someone Ti kaneis? (“How are you?”), and you might hear a simple answer: “Kala.” I'm well. Related forms of the word show up in everyday wishes: kaló taxídi, a good journey; kalí órexi, a good appetite; kaló mína, a good month.

Why does it matter?

Because it shows us that for nearly three thousand years, the language has described how people speak into each other’s ordinary lives wishing for or conveying wellness. Kala is a word with ancient roots but still at home in the rhythm of someone’s modern day.

What We’re Building Toward

We build homes around the way you, and the generations that follow you, will live in them. How you breathe. How you sleep. How you feel when you walk through the door. A place where you can rest and recover when life feels chaotic. Where you can feel comfortable and safe. Where the thoughtfulness we put into the building supports the life you’re building in it.

That’s what Kala means to us. It’s the idea behind our name, the homes we build, and the company we want to be. Beautiful and good. Whole and well.
