GENERAL FAQ

We love designing and building high-performance homes. We love working with our customers to help them achieve their goals of living in a beautiful home that is durable, healthy, comfortable, and sustainable. We love answering questions. In fact, we usually can’t shut up once we get started. Don’t be afraid to tell us to calm down.

  • How long does it take to build a Kala home?

Ten to twelve months is a realistic construction time estimate for most projects once design is complete. Homes can take from six to 18 months depending on site complications, design complexity, and overall size. Other considerations include regulatory approval, inspections, design selections, supply chain challenges, and other items.

  • Does Kala perform deep retrofit projects?

Yes. A deep energy retrofit of a home can provide the same health, comfort, durability, and sustainability benefits of building new while preserving the original character of an existing structure.

  • Does Kala perform remodeling or expansion projects?

Yes. Major renovation work is highly rewarding and represents some of our most satisfying projects by bringing healthy, comfortable, durable spaces to life in older, outdated buildings.

  • Where in Kansas City do you build?

Throughout the greater Kansas City region including Lawrence, St Joseph, Harrisonville, Ottawa and other communities in about a 100 mile radius. We have also provided high-performance consulting, architecture, and construction services on select projects around the United States in both rural and urban settings.

  • Will I have a dedicated point of contact?

Yes. You'll work with one primary contact throughout the entire process. As you move through different phases, we'll introduce you to each team of architects, interior designers, and construction managers, but your main contact serves as the liaison between you and every aspect of your project.

  • Can I tour a completed home?

Maybe. Our customers are excited to talk about their homes but we honor their privacy and respect their time. As our relationship develops and a tour of a finished home seems to make sense we can usually arrange one.

  • Can I tour an uncompleted home?

We are so happy you asked because touring a home under construction is the best way to truly appreciate the difference between a Kala home and a typical home. Seeing how thick walls work, how meticulously high-performance windows are installed, how mechanical systems route their way through the house, how air sealing is accomplished, and how insulation is installed are just some of the benefits of touring a home that is under construction and hasn’t yet been covered up by sheetrock.

  • Can you provide references from existing customers?

Yes. We're proud of our relationships with homeowners, and they're happy to share their stories. Almost without exception they become advocates for high-performance building after living in their Kala homes.

  • What's the first step if I'm interested?

Give us a call or fill out the form on our contact page. We'll start with a conversation about your needs, timeline, and vision. We want to make sure it's a good fit for everyone before moving forward, as every one of our homes is built on the solid foundation of clear communication, honesty, and trust.
