GENERAL FAQ
We love designing and building high-performance homes. We love working with our customers to help them achieve their goals of living in a beautiful house that is durable, healthy, comfortable, and sustainable. We love answering questions. In fact, we usually can’t shut up once we get started. Don’t be afraid to tell us to calm down.
How long does it take to build a Kala home?
Ten to twelve months is a realistic construction time estimate for most projects once design is complete. Homes can take from six to 18 months depending on site complications, design complexity, and overall size. Other considerations include regulatory approval, inspections, design selections, supply chain challenges, and other items. But we can generally give you a time estimate that is accurate to within a month or two fairly early in the process.
Where in Kansas City do you build?
Throughout the greater Kansas City region, including Lawrence, St. Joseph, Harrisonville, Ottawa, and other communities, in about a 100-mile radius. We have also provided high-performance consulting, architecture, and construction services on select projects around the United States in both rural and urban settings.
Can you help turn a normal home into a Kala home?
Yes. A deep energy retrofit of a home can provide the same health, comfort, durability, and sustainability benefits of building new while preserving the original character of an existing structure. We can help analyze your home and determine whether a retrofit is possible and the scope and cost of the work required to do so.
Does Kala perform remodeling or expansion projects?
Yes. Major renovation work is highly rewarding and represents some of our most satisfying projects by bringing healthy, comfortable, durable spaces to life in older buildings.
Will I have a dedicated point of contact?
Yes. As you move through different phases, you’ll be working with an architect, an interior designer, and a construction manager, but your main contact serves as the liaison between you and every aspect of your project.
Can I tour a completed home?
Maybe :-). Our customers are excited to talk about their homes, but we honor their privacy and respect their time. As our relationship develops and a tour of a finished home seems to make sense, we can usually arrange one. We do not currently provide virtual tours of Kala homes but are considering doing so in the future. In the meantime, there is a rich set of photography in our portfolio.
Can I tour an uncompleted home?
We are so happy you asked because touring a home under construction is the best way to truly appreciate the difference between a Kala home and a typical house. Seeing how thick walls work, how meticulously high-performance windows are installed, how mechanical systems route their way through the house, how air sealing is accomplished, and how insulation is added are just some of the benefits of touring a home that is under construction and hasn’t yet been covered up by sheetrock.
Can you provide references from existing customers?
Yes. We're proud of our strong relationships with homeowners, and they're happy to share their stories. Almost without exception they become advocates for high-performance building after living in their Kala homes. You can also view video testimonials from happy Kala clients who built homes in Overland Park, West Plaza, Beacon Hill, and Westwood (just four of the neighborhoods Kala builds in throughout the Kansas City metro).
How long has Kala been building homes?
The Kala team has been building, renovating, and retrofitting high-performance homes for over 20 years and applies more than 200 years of collective experience to achieve the exceptional level of comfort, health, durability, and sustainability our homeowners appreciate.
Does Kala have its own building team, or is everything sub-contracted to other companies?
Kala has a team of experienced professionals that complete the framing, window installation, foundation and slab insulation, and other key high-performance details to a high level of precision and craftsmanship. Kala also has a finish carpentry team that is responsible for ensuring that each home is completed to the highest standards of quality. Kala works with subcontractors who perform other tasks, all of which are carefully monitored by a Kala construction supervisor. Each subcontractor is carefully chosen for their ability to deliver impeccable work.
Do Kala homes come with a warranty?
Every Kala home comes with a standard home warranty of one year. Kala continues to stay in contact with and support every homeowner that we have built a home for over time, and we are committed to continuing a tradition of this lifetime connection. This means we are only one phone call or email away from our customers, no matter how long they have been in their home.
How long will a Kala home last?
Kala homes are designed and built to such durable standards that each one should offer a lifespan that is double or triple the lifespan (or even more) of code minimum homes.
Does Kala build only custom homes or do you have homes on the market?
While Kala architects and builds custom homes primarily, Kala also has a consistent but small number of curated, speculative home projects. Current active projects include the Westside and West Plaza. Kala is also involved with The Way Home in creating affordable homes on the east side. You can visit our portfolio to find additional projects that are being developed over time.
